He played hockey and football. In college, Kaye earned a Bachelor's degree in History and went on to obtain a Master's degree in educational psychology. It is also assumed he is of the Christian faith; in the WWE documentary Rey Mysterio: The Life of a Masked Man, Kaye commented on Mysterio's mask, which had been modified from having a crown sewn onto it to a Christian cross in its place. Kaye stated, "I like how you swapped the crown for the true king".
