Marshall Railway Station - History

History

Marshall station first opened in 1879 as "Connewarre", on the "up" side of the Marshalltown Road level crossing. The previous year had seen the opening of the Geelong Racecourse branch, which left the main line a few hundred metres past the station, but closed in 1909 when the racecourse was relocated closer to Geelong. In 1912 a pipe making factory was opened at the "down" end, for works on Geelong's sewer outfall. A narrow gauge tramway was used during construction.

The station was renamed Marshall in 1907. The passenger platform was removed in 1958, and Marshall was closed to all traffic in 1964.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

What we call National-Socialism is the poisonous perversion of ideas which have a long history in German intellectual life.
    Thomas Mann (1875–1955)

We said that the history of mankind depicts man; in the same way one can maintain that the history of science is science itself.
    Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe (1749–1832)

What has history to do with me? Mine is the first and only world! I want to report how I find the world. What others have told me about the world is a very small and incidental part of my experience. I have to judge the world, to measure things.
    Ludwig Wittgenstein (1889–1951)
