Legal Status
In the United States under the National Firearms Act, to make a concealable weapon from a firearm originally made and sold as a rifle requires payment of a $200.00 tax, approval from the BATFE and federal registration. However, a “lever action pistol” made and sold subject to concealable weapon laws is treated as a pistol by federal law.

Famous quotes containing the words legal and/or status:
“There are ... two minimum conditions necessary and sufficient for the existence of a legal system. On the one hand those rules of behavior which are valid according to the systems ultimate criteria of validity must be generally obeyed, and on the other hand, its rules of recognition specifying the criteria of legal validity and its rules of change and adjudication must be effectively accepted as common public standards of official behavior by its officials.”
—H.L.A. (Herbert Lionel Adolphus)
“As a work of art it has the same status as a long conversation between two not very bright drunks.”
—Clive James (b. 1939)
