Mahesh Bhupathi is a born again Christian. In 2001, he was awarded the Padma Shri, one of India's highest civilian awards. Bhupathi is an alumnus of the University of Mississippi in the United States. He was married to model Shvetha Jaishankar, but they divorced after being married for seven years.
He then married Lara Dutta, Miss Universe of 2000 in a civil ceremony on 16 February 2011 at Bandra, Mumbai. It was later followed by a Christian ceremony on 20 February 2011 at Sunset Point in Goa. On 1 August 2011 Dutta confirmed that she was pregnant with their first child. Their daughter Saira was born on 20 January 2012. In 2010, the couple started a film production company together, Big Daddy Productions.
