Lumbar Spinal Stenosis - Management

Management

Nonoperative therapies and laminectomy are the standard treatment for LSS; little "evidence is available to recommend specific nonsurgical treatments".

A trial of conservative treatment including "activity modification, medications, physical therapy, home exercise therapy, and spinal injections" is recommended. Individuals are generally advised to avoid stressing the lower back, particularly with the spine extended. A physical therapy program to provide core strengthening and aerobic conditioning may be recommended and is considered useful, although "high-level evidence is lacking for the direct benefit of physical therapy or exercise".

No officer should be required or permitted to take part in the management of political organizations, caucuses, conventions, or election campaigns. The care of a house, the conduct of a home, the management of children, the instruction and government of servants, are as deserving of scientific treatment and scientific professors and lectureships as are the care of farms, the management of manure and crops, and the raising and care of stock.
    Catherine E. Beecher (1800–1878)
