Love You (album) - Recording

Recording

Three months after the release of 15 Big Ones the recording of the basic tracks for most of Love You, then tentatively titled Brian Loves You took place, largely performed by Brian Wilson alone through the aid of multitrack recording. From October 13 to November 10, 1976, it is reported that Brian demoed over sixteen tracks for the Beach Boys' next release at Brother Studios. On November 27, eleven days after compiling the first rough mix of these demos, Brian made an appearance Saturday Night Live promoting the upcoming album and performing "Love is a Woman" for the first time. A few weeks following this performance, Brian's involvement in the project significantly waned. Starting with the dismissal of his therapist in early December, 1976, Brian was once again encumbered with the weight of poor mental health.

Needing a completed album to submit to Reprise Records in order to fulfil contractual obligations, during January, 1977, Carl Wilson unearthed the material Brian had been working on, remixed it and overdubbed elements such as guitar and extra percussion to bring to light the idiosyncratic sound of the songs, believing the flaws of the songs contributed to the playful spirit of the material. Around this period, the call and response tag to "Airplane" was recorded.

On January 14, 1977, The Beach Boys' twenty-first studio album, then titled Love You was assembled. Containing twelve of the songs the Beach Boys had worked upon during 1976 and 1977, the album also sourced two tracks from earlier recording sessions. "Good Time" a song co-written by Brian and Al Jardine was the first of these, being recorded on January 7, 1970 during a Sunflower session. Noted for being an abnormality in the context of the Love You album, the song features a Brian Wilson lead recorded prior to the shift in his vocals. The second of the tracks is the Brian Wilson and Roger McGuinn co-write, "Ding Dang". Various sessions of "Ding Dang" and its derivatives were recorded throughout the 1970s and there is ambiguity in determining it's exact recording date, though sources state it was likely recorded in late-1973.

Famous quotes containing the word recording:

Self-expression is not enough; experiment is not enough; the recording of special moments or cases is not enough. All of the arts have broken faith or lost connection with their origin and function. They have ceased to be concerned with the legitimate and permanent material of art.
    Jane Heap (c. 1880–1964)

Too many photographers try too hard. They try to lift photography into the realm of Art, because they have an inferiority complex about their Craft. You and I would see more interesting photography if they would stop worrying, and instead, apply horse-sense to the problem of recording the look and feel of their own era.
    Jessie Tarbox Beals (1870–1942)

He shall not die, by G—, cried my uncle Toby.
MThe ACCUSING SPIRIT which flew up to heaven’s chancery with the oath, blush’d as he gave it in;—and the RECORDING ANGEL as he wrote it down, dropp’d a tear upon the word, and blotted it out for ever.
    Laurence Sterne (1713–1768)
