About The College

The college celebrated its centenary with a number of events in 2009. It has 17 subject areas, split between academic and vocational, and full and part-time courses. Education is provided at the further and higher education level, with GCSE qualifications in English and Mathematics also available. Also available are apprenticeships, a variety of "access" courses aimed at those who seek educational progression, but through "non-traditional" paths, and "foundation" courses providing skills targeted at those starting work or beginning to live independently.

There are approximately 8,000 students, split between 3,000 on academic courses and the remainder (5,000) on vocational and other courses. The College has an extensive campus, unusual amongst British colleges as it provides Halls of Residence on site, normally attributed only to Higher Education level and above, and its students are members of the same Union as those studying at the University and RNIB College.

Facilities provided on site include the new Radmoor Centre which accommodates the Loughborough Sports Centre the new Futures Restaurant and the Elite Hair Beauty and Complementary Therapies salons. Recent additions also include a state-of-the-art Technology Centre. The main college site also has a Student Union shop. Other facilities (such as the Students Union building) are shared with the nearby University campus, although a catered Students Union Common Room is provided within the main college building.

Support services provided include support for students with learning difficulties or disabilities, accommodation in a variety of Halls of Residence, most with in-room network connections and some with en-suite facilities, and a team of persons employed to provide advice concerning student welfare, finance, etc., a student liaison and enrichment team, counselling service and a day nursery.

There is an extensive Learning Resources Centre providing a range of paper and electronic resources, and the college has significant numbers of networked computers, and has invested heavily in additional tools and equipment such as touch-screen presentation white boards in lecture and practical teaching rooms.

Famous quotes containing the word college:

Thirty-five years ago, when I was a college student, people wrote letters. The businessman who read, the lawyer who traveled; the dressmaker in evening school, my unhappy mother, our expectant neighbor: all conducted an often large and varied correspondence. It was the accustomed way of ordinarily educated people to occupy the world beyond their own small and immediate lives.
    Vivian Gornick (b. 1935)
