Lou Grant

Lou Grant is a fictional character played by Edward Asner in two television series produced by MTM Enterprises for CBS. The first was Mary Tyler Moore (1970–1977), a half-hour light-hearted situation comedy in which the character was the news director at fictional television station WJM-TV. A spinoff series, entitled Lou Grant (1977–1982), was an hour-long serious dramatic series which frequently engaged in social commentary, featuring the character as city editor of the fictional Los Angeles Tribune. Although spin-offs are common on American television, Lou Grant remains the only character to have a leading role on both a popular comedy and a popular dramatic series. The Lou Grant character was preceded, in some aspects and to a lesser degree, by Mike O'Toole of the The Jim Backus Show.

Famous quotes containing the words lou and/or grant:

... some of my people could have been left [in Africa] and are living there. And I can’t understand them and they don’t know me and I don’t know them because all we had was taken away from us. And I became kind of angry; I felt the anger of why this had to happen to us. We were so stripped and robbed of our background, we wind up with nothing.
    —Fannie Lou Hamer (1917–1977)

Nothing is funnier than unhappiness, I grant you that.... Yes, yes, it’s the most comical thing in the world.
    Samuel Beckett (1906–1989)
