Loop Parkway

The Loop Parkway (also known as the Loop) is a 2.65-mile (4.26 km) long parkway spur in Nassau County, New York, United States. The Loop Parkway connects Lido Boulevard in Long Beach (in Point Lookout) to the Meadowbrook State Parkway in Freeport. The Loop Parkway connects the roads via two islands in South Oyster Bay, Alder Island and Meadow Island, which are connected via a drawbridge. The parkway, maintained by the New York State Department of Transportation, is internally designated as New York State Route 908C, an unsigned reference route.

The Loop Parkway was first constructed in 1934 as the Long Beach Loop Causeway, funded with money from the Reconstruction Finance Corporation. The Long Beach Loop Causeway was completed six months ahead of schedule in October 1934 and on October 27, 1934, the causeway along with the Meadowbrook State Parkway, were opened by Robert Moses, then a candidate for the Governor of New York and New York City Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia. As part of the construction funds, tolls were implemented on the causeway, which went into effect on January 2, 1935. These tollbooths, once considered the murder site of Sonny Corleone in Mario Puzo's The Godfather, were part of Governor Hugh Carey's need to make a budget in 1978, were closed so the budget would not be delayed any further.
