Famous quotes containing the words london, underground and/or stock:

I suggested a doubt, that if I were to reside in London, the exquisite zest with which I relished it in occasional visits might go off, and I might grow tired of it. JOHNSON. “ ... No, Sir, when a man is tired of London, he is tired of life; for there is in London all that life can afford.”
    Samuel Johnson (1709–1784)

It is in our interests to let the police and their employers go on believing that the Underground is a conspiracy, because it increases their paranoia and their inability to deal with what is really happening. As long as they look for ringleaders and documents they will miss their mark, which is that proportion of every personality which belongs in the Underground.
    Germaine Greer (b. 1939)

I’d rather I were dead and gone,
And my body laid in grave,
    Ere a rusty stock o coal-black smith
    My maidenhead should have.
Unknown. The Twa Magicians (l. 17–20)
