The south of the borough is within the London Riverside development area of the Thames Gateway; an area designated as a national priority for urban regeneration. The local authority is Barking and Dagenham London Borough Council. On the Channel Four 'Best and Worst Places to Live', It was voted as the worst area to live in England.
