Local Hero (album) - Background

Background

Following a string of three multi-platinum albums with Dire Straits—Dire Straits (1978), Communiqué (1979), and Making Movies (1980)—the group's lead singer, guitarist, songwriter, and producer, Mark Knopfler, began to look for new musical challenges and opportunities. In early 1982, Knopfler's manager wrote to several film directors indicating that the Dire Straits front man was interested in writing film music. Producer David Puttnam responded and after Knopfler reviewed the Local Hero project, accepted the job. Following the completion of Dire Straits' fourth album, Love Over Gold (1982), recorded from 8 March to 11 June 1982—an album also destined for multi-platinum status—Knopfler began work on his first film music project.

Famous quotes containing the word background:

... every experience in life enriches one’s background and should teach valuable lessons.
    Mary Barnett Gilson (1877–?)

Silence is the universal refuge, the sequel to all dull discourses and all foolish acts, a balm to our every chagrin, as welcome after satiety as after disappointment; that background which the painter may not daub, be he master or bungler, and which, however awkward a figure we may have made in the foreground, remains ever our inviolable asylum, where no indignity can assail, no personality can disturb us.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

In the true sense one’s native land, with its background of tradition, early impressions, reminiscences and other things dear to one, is not enough to make sensitive human beings feel at home.
    Emma Goldman (1869–1940)
