List Of St. Louis Cardinals Managers
The St. Louis Cardinals are a baseball franchise based in St. Louis, Missouri. They are members of the Central division of Major League Baseball's National League. The Cardinals franchise was formed in 1882.
There have been a total of 62 different managers for the Cardinals, which is more than any other Major League Baseball team. Ned Cuthbert became the first manager of the then St. Louis Browns in 1882, serving for one season. Charles Comiskey became the first manager who held the title of manager for the Cardinals for more than one season. The franchise underwent several managerial changes in the 19th century, including three terms by Charles Comiskey and owner Chris von der Ahe. The franchise was officially renamed the St. Louis Cardinals in 1900. Since then the management has become more stable, and the Cardinals have won 11 World Series championships. The longest tenured manager in Cardinals history is Tony La Russa, who led the team from 1996–2011; La Russa also leads Cardinals managers in wins, losses, and playoff appearances. Of the Cardinals managers, Comiskey, Tommy McCarthy, Roger Connor, Kid Nichols, Roger Bresnahan, Miller Huggins, Branch Rickey, Rogers Hornsby, Bill McKechnie, Billy Southworth, Frankie Frisch, Red Schoendienst, and Whitey Herzog have all been inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
In 1883, Cuthbert was replaced by Ted Sullivan. The Cardinals made their first unofficial playoff appearance under Comiskey in 1885. Hornsby, Frisch, Gabby Street, Eddie Dyer, Southworth, Johnny Keane, Schoendienst, Herzog, and La Russa have all won a modern World Series with the Cardinals, with Southworth and La Russa each winning two. The highest winning percentage of any manager who managed at least one season was Comiskey, with a percentage of .685. The lowest percentage by a manager was Arlie Latham in 1896, although he managed for only 3 games. The lowest percentage of a manager with at least one season with the Cardinals was Tim Hurst, the manager in the 1898 season with a percentage of .260.

Famous quotes containing the words list of, list, louis and/or managers:
“Every morning I woke in dread, waiting for the day nurse to go on her rounds and announce from the list of names in her hand whether or not I was for shock treatment, the new and fashionable means of quieting people and of making them realize that orders are to be obeyed and floors are to be polished without anyone protesting and faces are to be made to be fixed into smiles and weeping is a crime.”
—Janet Frame (b. 1924)
“We saw the machinery where murderers are now executed. Seven have been executed. The plan is better than the old one. It is quietly done. Only a few, at the most about thirty or forty, can witness [an execution]. It excites nobody outside of the list permitted to attend. I think the time for capital punishment has passed. I would abolish it. But while it lasts this is the best mode.”
—Rutherford Birchard Hayes (18221893)
“Each has his own tree of ancestors, but at the top of all sits Probably Arboreal.”
—Robert Louis Stevenson (18501894)
“We also have to make sure our children know the history of women. Tell them the rotten truth: It wasnt always possible for women to become doctors or managers or insurance people. Let them be armed with a true picture of the way we want it to be.”
—Anne Roiphe (20th century)
