Famous quotes containing the words list of, list, family and/or characters:

Every morning I woke in dread, waiting for the day nurse to go on her rounds and announce from the list of names in her hand whether or not I was for shock treatment, the new and fashionable means of quieting people and of making them realize that orders are to be obeyed and floors are to be polished without anyone protesting and faces are to be made to be fixed into smiles and weeping is a crime.
    Janet Frame (b. 1924)

    Lastly, his tomb
Shall list and founder in the troughs of grass
And none shall speak his name.
    Karl Shapiro (b. 1913)

Freud is all nonsense; the secret of neurosis is to be found in the family battle of wills to see who can refuse longest to help with the dishes. The sink is the great symbol of the bloodiness of family life.
    Julian Mitchell (20th century)

My characters never die screaming in rage. They attempt to pull themselves back together and go on. And that’s basically a conservative view of life.
    Jane Smiley (b. 1949)
