The Spider Men of Mars
The Spider Men: April–July 1941, "Captain Marvel Adventures" #2.
Invading Earth from Mars, the Spider Men look like large 4 limbed beetles only about 12 feet tall, and are first found out about by an astronomer. They are easily able to defeat Earth forces. As Captain Marvel fights this invading force, he discovers they are not truly alive but mechanical robots. So, he travels to Mars to fight the human looking ruler there, who first thinks Billy is a fifth columnist and sentences him to execution. But Billy turns into Captain Marvel, exacting a promise never to invade again. He then returns to Earth to wipe out the remaining robots.

“Back now to autumn, leaving the ended husk
Of summer that brought them here for Show Saturday
The men with hunters, dog-breeding wool-defined women,
Children all saddle-swank, mugfaced middleaged wives
Glaring at jellies, husbands on leave from the garden
Watchful as weasels, car-tuning curt-haired sons
Back now, all of them, to their local lives....”
—Philip Larkin (19221986)
“The swords a cross; thereon He died:
On breast of Mars the goddess sighed.”
—William Butler Yeats (18651939)
