List of Kings of Macedon

List Of Kings Of Macedon

Macedon (also known as Macedonia) was an ancient kingdom centered on the present-day region of Macedonia in northern Greece, inhabited by the Ancient Macedonians. At various points in its history the kingdom proper encompassed parts of the present-day Republic of Macedonia, Albania, Bulgaria and Turkish Thrace. It emerged as the dominant power in Greece during the 4th century BC, when King Philip II successfully forced the Greek city-states, such as Athens and Thebes, into the Corinthian League. Philip's son, Alexander the Great, would go on to conquer the Persian Empire a few years later. The Kingdom of Macedon itself soon lost direct control of Alexander's vast Asian territories, but it broadly retained its hegemony over Greece itself until defeated by the Roman Republic in the Macedonian Wars (215–148 BC).

Thirty—the promise of a decade of loneliness, a thinning list of single men to know, a thinning brief-case of enthusiasm, thinning hair.

Every morning I woke in dread, waiting for the day nurse to go on her rounds and announce from the list of names in her hand whether or not I was for shock treatment, the new and fashionable means of quieting people and of making them realize that orders are to be obeyed and floors are to be polished without anyone protesting and faces are to be made to be fixed into smiles and weeping is a crime.
    Janet Frame (b. 1924)

And the Pope has cast his arms abroad for agony and loss,
And called the kings of Christendom for swords about the Cross,
    Gilbert Keith Chesterton (1874–1936)
