List of Islands of Scotland - Holy Islands

Holy Islands

A huge number of the islands of Scotland have some kind of culdee/church connection, and/or are dominated by a church. The more notable include:

  • Davaar Island
  • Egilsay
  • Eynhallow
  • Holy Isle
  • Inchcolm
  • Inch Kenneth
  • Inchmahome (F)
  • Iona
  • Isle Maree
  • North Rona
  • Oronsay
  • Papa Stronsay (current Transalpine Redemptorist monastery. Islands called "Papa" or "Pabbay" tend to be former saints' islands)
  • St Ninian's Isle
  • St Serf's Inch (F)
  • Tiree ("land of Iona")

Brother Isle's name is not ecclesiastical in origin as is sometimes stated.

Famous quotes containing the words holy and/or islands:

For them it’s out-of-date and outmoded to perform miracles; teaching the people is too like hard work, interpreting the holy scriptures is for schoolmen and praying is a waste of time; to shed tears is weak and womanish, to be needy is degrading; to suffer defeat is a disgrace and hardly fitting for one who scarcely permits the greatest of kings to kiss the toes of his sacred feet; and finally, death is an unattractive prospect, and dying on a cross would be an ignominious end.
    Desiderius Erasmus (c. 1466–1536)

What are the islands to me
    if you are lost
    what is Naxos, Tinos, Andros,
    and Delos, the clasp
    of the white necklace?
    Hilda Doolittle (1886–1961)
