List of Awards and Nominations Received By Gorillaz - Mercury Prize Award

Mercury Prize Award

The Mercury Prize are the annual awards by the British Phonographic Industry and British Association of Record Dealers. In 2001, their debut album, Gorillaz, was nominated for an Mercury Prize, but it was later withdrawn at the band's request. Murdoc Niccals, cartoon bassist of the band, described the nomination as, "It's like carrying a dead albatross round your neck for eternity". This is the only time that Gorillaz has ever withdrawn for an award nomination.

Famous quotes containing the words mercury, prize and/or award:

The mercury sank in the mouth of the dying day.
    What instruments we have agree
The day of his death was a dark cold day.
    —W.H. (Wystan Hugh)

I prize the purity of his character as highly as I do that of hers. As a moral being, whatever it is morally wrong for her to do, it is morally wrong for him to do. The fallacious doctrine of male and female virtues has well nigh ruined all that is morally great and lovely in his character: he has been quite as deep a sufferer by it as woman, though mostly in different respects and by other processes.
    Angelina Grimké (1805–1879)

The award of a pure gold medal for poetry would flatter the recipient unduly: no poem ever attains such carat purity.
    Robert Graves (1895–1985)
