Lino Oviedo - Supreme Court Decision and Potential Presidential Candidacy

Supreme Court Decision and Potential Presidential Candidacy

On October 30, 2007, Oviedo's conviction was overturned by the Supreme Court in an eight to one decision following testimony from former officers that there had been no coup attempt. The ruling left Oviedo free to run in the April 2008 presidential election. In January 2008 he was nominated as the candidate of his party, the National Union of Ethical Citizens, without opposition. He lost the election getting 22.8% of votes.

Lino Oviedo's similarly-named nephew, Lino César Oviedo Sánchez, is a member of the Senate of Paraguay for UNACE since 2008.

Famous quotes containing the words supreme, court, decision, potential and/or presidential:

What makes us heroic?—Confronting simultaneously our supreme suffering and our supreme hope.
    Friedrich Nietzsche (1844–1900)

In government offices which are sensitive to the vehemence and passion of mass sentiment public men have no sure tenure. They are in effect perpetual office seekers, always on trial for their political lives, always required to court their restless constituents.
    Walter Lippmann (1889–1974)

Will mankind never learn that policy is not morality,—that it never secures any moral right, but considers merely what is expedient? chooses the available candidate,—who is invariably the devil,—and what right have his constituents to be surprised, because the devil does not behave like an angel of light? What is wanted is men, not of policy, but of probity,—who recognize a higher law than the Constitution, or the decision of the majority.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

Much of what contrives to create critical moments in parenting stems from a fundamental misunderstanding as to what the child is capable of at any given age. If a parent misjudges a child’s limitations as well as his own abilities, the potential exists for unreasonable expectations, frustration, disappointment and an unrealistic belief that what the child really needs is to be punished.
    Lawrence Balter (20th century)

The Republican Vice Presidential Candidate ... asks you to place him a heartbeat from the Presidency.
    Adlai Stevenson (1900–1965)
