Libya National Football Team

The Libya national football team (Arabic: منتخب ليبيا لكرة القدم‎) is the national association football team of Libya and is controlled by the Libyan Football Federation. The team has never qualified for the senior FIFA World Cup. They have qualified for three Africa Cup of Nations, one in 1982 where they finished runners-up and also hosted the tournament. The second was in 2006, which was the first time that they qualified without hosting the tournament where they failed to progress from their group, and the third was in 2012. They also finished runners-up in the 1964 Arab Nations Cup.

Libya recorded good performances in the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations under Brazilian Coach Marcos Paqueta. They managed to record their first win in the tournament outside of Libya in their final match against Senegal. This saw their FIFA world rankings rise to the highest it has ever been at 53, later rising to 39 in July.

Famous quotes containing the words football team, national, football and/or team:

You can’t be a Real Country unless you have A BEER and an airline—it helps if you have some kind of a football team, or some nuclear weapons, but at the very least you need a BEER.
    Frank Zappa (1940–1993)

There is no national science just as there is no national multiplication table; anything that is national is not scientific.
    Anton Pavlovich Chekhov (1860–1904)

People stress the violence. That’s the smallest part of it. Football is brutal only from a distance. In the middle of it there’s a calm, a tranquility. The players accept pain. There’s a sense of order even at the end of a running play with bodies stewn everywhere. When the systems interlock, there’s a satisfaction to the game that can’t be duplicated. There’s a harmony.
    Don Delillo (b. 1926)

    Is my team ploughing,
That I was used to drive
    And hear the harness jingle
    When I was man alive?
    —A.E. (Alfred Edward)
