Li Houzhu - Accession To The Throne

Accession To The Throne

Li Houzhu’s father Li Jing, the second ruler of the Southern Tang, died in 961. Li ascended the throne in 961, accepting a role subservient to the Song Dynasty to the north; as the Southern Tang state at this time was, in many respects, little more than a regional ruler in the face of the growing power of the Song Dynasty.

Famous quotes containing the word throne:

    I tell you, hopeless grief is passionless;
    That only men incredulous of despair,
    Half-taught in anguish, through the midnight air
    Beat upward to God’s throne in loud access
    Of shrieking and reproach. Full desertness,
    In souls as countries, lieth silent-bare
    Under the blanching, vertical eye-glare
    Of the absolute Heavens.
    Elizabeth Barrett Browning (1806–1861)
