    In diluted gold bars across the boulevard brag
    Of proud, seamed faces with mercy and murder hinting

    The pink paint on the innocence of fear;
    Walk in a gingerly manner up the hall.

    Having each some shingles of thought well dried, we sat and whittled them.
    —Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

    Strange gratitude, as if evil itself were beautiful,
    —Frank Templeton Prince (b. 1912)
