Lazarus Saturday - Serbian Orthodox Church

Serbian Orthodox Church

The feast (Vrbica, Lazareva Subota) is commemorated by Serbian Orthodox Christians and it has its own features, also to commemorate the Tsar Lazar who died symbolically for Serbia at the Battle of Kosovo. Due to a general lack of palm trees, pussy willow branches are blessed, and distributed to the faithful. Small bells are often tied to the branches.

Famous quotes containing the words orthodox and/or church:

The gloomy theology of the orthodox—the Calvinists—I do not, I cannot believe. Many of the notions—nay, most of the notions—which orthodox people have of the divinity of the Bible, I disbelieve. I am so nearly infidel in all my views, that too, in spite of my wishes, that none but the most liberal doctrines can command my assent.
    Rutherford Birchard Hayes (1822–1893)

The form of act or thought mattered nothing. The hymns of David, the plays of Shakespeare, the metaphysics of Descartes, the crimes of Borgia, the virtues of Antonine, the atheism of yesterday and the materialism of to-day, were all emanation of divine thought, doing their appointed work. It was the duty of the church to deal with them all, not as though they existed through a power hostile to the deity, but as instruments of the deity to work out his unrevealed ends.
    Henry Brooks Adams (1838–1918)
