Lancaster Park

Lancaster Park, formerly Jade Stadium and currently known as AMI Stadium through sponsorship rights, is a sports stadium situated in Waltham, a suburb of Christchurch in New Zealand. Following the February 2011 Christchurch earthquake, the stadium is closed. The Hadlee Stand has already been demolished, and the fate of the rest of the stadium is unresolved.

It has hosted various sports, including rugby union, cricket, association football, athletics, trotting (until, in 1899, this club moved to Addington Racecourse), rugby league, and non-sporting events such as concerts by Pearl Jam in 2009, Bon Jovi in 2008, Roger Waters in 2006, Meat Loaf in 2004, U2 in 1989 & 1993, Tina Turner in 1993 and 1997, Dire Straits in 1986 and 1991, and Billy Joel in 1987, but is primarily a rugby and cricket ground and is the home of the Crusaders rugby union team, who compete in Super Rugby. Its current capacity is 38,628.

Famous quotes containing the word park:

Is a park any better than a coal mine? What’s a mountain got that a slag pile hasn’t? What would you rather have in your garden—an almond tree or an oil well?
    Jean Giraudoux (1882–1944)
