Creeks and Rivers
The main inflowing rivers are the Sammamish and Cedar Rivers. Prior to the construction of the Lake Washington Ship Canal in 1916, the Sammamish was the primary source of water for Lake Washington. The creation of the ship canal lowered the water level of Lake Washington by 8 feet, which lowered the flow of the Sammamish. As part of the ship canal project, the Cedar river was diverted into Lake Washington, and it is now the primary source of water for Lake Washington.
In addition, there are numerous small creeks and rivers which feed the lake, including:
- Taylor Creek
- Ravenna Creek
- Thornton Creek
- Kelsey Creek
- Juanita Creek
- Coal Creek
- May Creek
- Yesler Creek

Famous quotes containing the word rivers:
“While the Republic has already acquired a history world-wide, America is still unsettled and unexplored. Like the English in New Holland, we live only on the shores of a continent even yet, and hardly know where the rivers come from which float our navy.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
