Pyramid Lake and Truckee River Water Quality

Pyramid Lake, the second largest natural lake in the western U.S. prior to construction of the Derby Dam, has been the focus of several water quality investigations, the most detailed starting in the mid-1980s. Under direction of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, a comprehensive dynamic hydrology transport model was developed by Earth Metrics Inc.; the model's name was subsequently changed to DSSAM, and it was applied to analyze impacts of a variety of land use and wastewater management decisions throughout the 3,120-square-mile (8,100 km2) Truckee River Basin. These analyses allowed more competent decisions to be made regarding the watersheds as well as management of treated effluent discharged to the Truckee River.

Famous quotes containing the words pyramid, lake, river, water and/or quality:

So universal and widely related is any transcendent moral greatness, and so nearly identical with greatness everywhere and in every age,—as a pyramid contracts the nearer you approach its apex,—that, when I look over my commonplace-book of poetry, I find that the best of it is oftenest applicable, in part or wholly, to the case of Captain Brown.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

    Will lovely, lively, virginal today
Shatter for us with a wing’s drunken blow
This hard, forgotten lake haunted in snow
By the sheer ice of flocks not flown away!
    Stéphane Mallarmé (1842–1898)

Our trouble is that we drink too much tea. I see in this the slow revenge of the Orient, which has diverted the Yellow River down our throats.
    —J.B. (John Boynton)

But the beggar gazes on calamity
And thereafter he belongs to it, to bread
Hard found, and water tasting of misery.
    Wallace Stevens (1879–1955)

But the quality of the imagination is to flow, and not to freeze.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)
