Early Years
Eckel attended Holy Spirit School in South Philadelphia throughout his elementary school life where he played baseball and basketball. He played football for St. Monica's School since Holy Spirit didn't have a program. Changing parishes in his 8th grade year, Eckel was able to attend and graduate Holy Spriit while playing football for The Saint Denis Bulldogs of Havertown, PA. He then attended Episcopal Academy in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and was a student and a letterman in football (3 years), baseball (3 years), and ice hockey (1 year). In football, he was a two-time first team All-Area and All-League selection and as a senior, while captaining his team, also garnered first team All-City honors and All-Area as a middle linebacker. Eckel amassed nearly 3,000 rushing yards in his high school career and 40 touchdowns. While playing baseball for the Churchmen of Episcopal Academy, Eckel recorded a .460 batting average during his junior season earning all city honors as well as All League/Area selections. He helped the Churchmen win their first league title in 50 years. As a senior Eckel earned similar accolades, helped the Churchmen win another league title, and was selected to the All-League and All-Area teams.

Famous quotes related to early years:
“I believe that if we are to survive as a planet, we must teach this next generation to handle their own conflicts assertively and nonviolently. If in their early years our children learn to listen to all sides of the story, use their heads and then their mouths, and come up with a plan and share, then, when they become our leaders, and some of them will, they will have the tools to handle global problems and conflict.”
—Barbara Coloroso (20th century)
