Sound
Sonically, the DSS-1 has more diversity in sound than any Korg synthesizer released up to that date. The 12-bit resolution and the capability for full-blown samples gave it an edge over the 8-bit DW-6000/8000 digital waveform synthesizers. The DSS-1 can be used as a hybrid synthesizer as well as a sample-playback keyboard (i.e. "ROMpler").
Now, with its comparatively tiny 256k of RAM, the DSS-1 is most useful as a powerful hybrid polysynth with a sampling option, rather than as a regular sampler.

Famous quotes containing the word sound:
“Music proposes. Sound disposes.”
—Babette Deutsch (1895–1982)
“A soldier firm and sound of heart.”
—William Shakespeare (1564–1616)
“Wild as it was, it was hard for me to get rid of the associations of the settlements. Any steady and monotonous sound, to which I did not distinctly attend, passed for a sound of human industry.... Our minds anywhere, when left to themselves, are always thus busily drawing conclusions from false premises.”
—Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
