News Operation
Currently, KOMO broadcasts a total of 38 hours of local news each week (with six hours on weekdays and four hours on weekends).
For the last three decades, KOMO has competed directly with KING-TV for first place in the Seattle news ratings. KOMO continually places first amongst the local newscasts.
KOMO currently does not air its newscasts in high definition, only enhanced definition. It relies on 16:9 480p standard definition as well as some studio HD cameras. All of it is produced in standard definition (the studio HD is downconverted) and then upconverted back to 720p. It is one of only two remaining English-language stations with in-house news departments in the top 20 Nielsen markets to continue to air their local newscasts in standard definition widescreen; the other is MyNetworkTV affiliate KRON-TV in San Francisco, California (until September 10, 2012, MyNetworkTV station WWOR-TV in Secaucus, New Jersey was the last remaining 4:3 SD holdout until it upgraded its newscasts to HD).
