The Kings Point Handicap is an American Thoroughbred horse race held annually during the latter part of March at Aqueduct Racetrack in Jamaica, New York. Open to horses age three and older bred in the State of New York, it is contested on dirt over a distance of one and one eighth miles (9 furlongs).
Inaugurated in 1981, the race is named for the village of Kings Point, New York on the north shore of Long Island, New York which is home to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.
The Kings Point Handicap was run at a mile and seventy yards from 1981 to 1987, and from 1989 to 1995. In 1988 it was run at one mile.
The race was run in two divisions in 2002.
Famous quotes containing the words kings, point and/or handicap:
“Why should kings and nobles have
Pictured trophies to their grave,
And we, churls, to thee deny
Thy pretty toys with thee to lie
A more harmless vanity?”
—Charles Lamb (17751834)
“By many a legendary tale of violence and wrong, as well as by events which have passed before their eyes, these people have been taught to look upon white men with abhorrence.... I can sympathize with the spirit which prompts the Typee warrior to guard all the passes to his valley with the point of his levelled spear, and, standing upon the beach, with his back turned upon his green home, to hold at bay the intruding European.”
—Herman Melville (18191891)
“I have the handicap of being born with a special language to which I alone have the key.”
—Gustave Flaubert (18211880)
