History
In the past the area was a part of Patchanta Khiri Khet province (now Koh Kong). Unlike the other parts of Koh Kong, this area became part of Siam (Thailand) by the French-Siamese contract in the reign of King Chulalongkorn, in which Siam had to cede the areas east of the Mekong river and provinces of western Cambodia like Battambang, Siam Nakhon and Sisophon.
It was created as a minor district (King Amphoe) in 1912 and officially upgraded to a full district in 1959.

Famous quotes containing the word history:
“Every generation rewrites the past. In easy times history is more or less of an ornamental art, but in times of danger we are driven to the written record by a pressing need to find answers to the riddles of today.... In times of change and danger when there is a quicksand of fear under mens reasoning, a sense of continuity with generations gone before can stretch like a lifeline across the scary present and get us past that idiot delusion of the exceptional Now that blocks good thinking.”
—John Dos Passos (18961970)
“Hence poetry is something more philosophic and of graver import than history, since its statements are rather of the nature of universals, whereas those of history are singulars.”
—Aristotle (384322 B.C.)
“The custard is setting; meanwhile
I not only have my own history to worry about
But am forced to fret over insufficient details related to large
Unfinished concepts that can never bring themselves to the point
Of being, with or without my help, if any were forthcoming.”
—John Ashbery (b. 1927)
