Keratinocyte - Role in Wound Healing

Role in Wound Healing

Wounds to the skin will be repaired in part by the migration of keratinocytes to fill in the gap created by the wound. The first set of keratinocytes to participate in that repair come from the bulge region of the hair follicle and will only survive transiently. Within the healed epidermis they will be replaced by keratinocytes originating from the epidermis.

At the opposite, epidermal keratinocytes, can contribute to de novo hair follicle formation during the healing of large wounds.

Keratinocytes migrate with a rolling motion during the process of wound healing.

Famous quotes containing the words role, wound and/or healing:

The trouble is that the expression ‘material thing’ is functioning already, from the very beginning, simply as a foil for ‘sense-datum’; it is not here given, and is never given, any other role to play, and apart from this consideration it would surely never have occurred to anybody to try to represent as some single kind of things the things which the ordinary man says that he ‘perceives.’
    —J.L. (John Langshaw)

These lovers cry, O ho they die!
Yet that which seems the wound to kill
Doth turn O ho! to ha, ha, he!
    So dying love lives still.
    William Shakespeare (1564–1616)

When pain of the world surrounds us with darkness and despair,
When searching just confounds us with false hopes ev’rywhere,
When lives are starved for meaning and destiny is bare,
We are called to follow Jesus and let God’s healing flow through us.
    Jim Strathdee (20th century)
