Sex Abuse Scandal
In 1990 Untener appointed John Hammer, a priest who had admitted to molesting an altar boy in Ohio, as a parish priest at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alma Michigan and St. Mary's Catholic Elementary School as the "Maximum Authority" over the school. Hammer was later accused of more molestations, which he admitted to parishioners, and continued in office after this until he decided to resign.
