Kelvedon Hatch Secret Nuclear Bunker - Building and Intended Purpose

Building and Intended Purpose

The bunker was first built as an air defence station (an 'R4' Sector Operations Control or SOC) as part of the RAF ROTOR air defence project. Upon the demise of the ROTOR SOC the remaining Nuclear Reporting Cell and UKWMO elements were incorporated into a Home Office 'Regional Seat of Government' or RSG. The bunker was able to hold various numbers (in the hundreds) of military and civilian personnel, the numbers changing over the years as the role of the building changed from SOC to RSG and in its later years; 'Regional Government Head Quarters' or RGHQ. In the event of a nuclear strike the RSG / RGHQs etc. would be tasked to organise the survival of the population and continue government operations.

Famous quotes containing the words building, intended and/or purpose:

The artist must be an egotist because, like the spider, he draws all his building material from his own breast. But just the same the artist alone among men knows what true humility means. His reach forever exceeds his grasp. He can never be satisfied with his work. He knows when he has done well, but he knows he has never attained his dream. He knows he never can.
    Rheta Childe Dorr (1866–1948)

In a seriously intended intellectual emancipation a person’s mute passions and cravings also hope to find their advantage.
    Friedrich Nietzsche (1844–1900)

Satire exists for the purpose of killing the social being [for the sake of] the true individual, the real human being.
    —D.H. (David Herbert)
