Style of Play
Houchen was a big 6 ft 1 in (1.85 m) centre-forward who had strength and power. Early in his career he broke his ribs and backbone, but learned the tricks of the trade, such as interlinking arms with opposition players to prevent them from jumping. Billy Horner compared him with Malcolm Poskett, and stated the only quality missing in Houchen's game was aggression. Horner and his coaching team of George Smith and Willie Maddren taught Houchen how to protect himself from the highly physical centre-halfs that dominated the division, and the youngster learned how to hold the ball up and bring other players into the attack.

Famous quotes containing the words style and/or play:
“The habit some writers indulge in of perpetual quotation is one it behoves lovers of good literature to protest against, for it is an insidious habit which in the end must cloud the stream of thought, or at least check spontaneity. If it be true that le style cest lhomme, what is likely to happen if lhomme is for ever eking out his own personality with that of some other individual?”
—Dame Ethel Smyth (18581944)
“Doth Fortune play the huswife with me now?”
—William Shakespeare (15641616)
