Jim Kay won the 2012 Greenaway Medal for his illustration of A Monster Calls (Walker Books), written by Patrick Ness from an idea by Siobhan Dowd, deceased.

Ness won the Carnegie Medal for the same work, which they completed without meeting. A Monster Calls is the first double winner of CILIP's two annual awards. It is recommended by the judges for children age nine and older (age 9+).

There were eight books on the shortlist announced 27 March, each published September 2010 to August 2011. The official website provides bibliographic data, front cover images, capsules, annotations for the public by the judging panel, and reader ages (given here) that range from 4+ to 9+.

For eight books on the preceding shortlist (2011), judges had recommended ages that ranged from 3+ to 8+. Recommended ages have ranged from 0+ to 11+ for books on the shortlist since 2001.

Books were nominated in September and October, nominations announced in November, the shortlist announced in March, and the winner announced online 14 June 2012.
