Influence

Though the theme of reincarnation was earlier handled in Indian cinema in Madhumati (1958) directed by none other than Bimal Roy and written by Ritwik Ghatak, starring Vyjayantimala and Dilip Kumar, where lost lovers reunite in another birth, and also in Chetan Anand's lyrical Kudrat (1981), starring Raaj Kumar, Rajesh Khanna and Hema Malini. The modern twist with murder and revenge angle set in made Subhash Ghai's Karz a pot-boiler, and went on to inspire several other Indian remakes, notably the Kannada film Yuga Purusha (1989), the Tamil film Enakkul Oruvan (1984) starring Kamal Hassan, the Telugu film Aatmabhalam (1985) starring Nandamuri Balakrishna, and more recently the Hindi film Karzzzz (2008) starring Himesh Reshammiya.

The films music inspired several film titles, notably Main Solah Baras Ki (1998), Paisa Yeh Paisa (1985), Ek Hasina Thi (2004), Aashiq Banaya Aapne (2006) and Om Shanti Om (2007) which was seen as light-hearted tribute to the film, as it borrowed many elements from it.

Famous quotes containing the word influence:

No power on earth or above the bottomless pit has such influence to terrorize and make cowards of men as the liquor power. Satan could not have fallen on a more potent instrument with which to thrall the world. Alcohol is king!
    Eliza “Mother” Stewart (1816–c. 1908)

To-day ... when material prosperity and well earned ease and luxury are assured facts from a national standpoint, woman’s work and woman’s influence are needed as never before; needed to bring a heart power into this money getting, dollar-worshipping civilization; needed to bring a moral force into the utilitarian motives and interests of the time; needed to stand for God and Home and Native Land versus gain and greed and grasping selfishness.
    Anna Julia Cooper (1859–1964)

To marry a man out of pity is folly; and, if you think you are going to influence the kind of fellow who has “never had a chance, poor devil,” you are profoundly mistaken. One can only influence the strong characters in life, not the weak; and it is the height of vanity to suppose that you can make an honest man of anyone.
    Margot Asquith (1864–1945)
