Karl Haushofer is a supporting character in the best selling Japanese historical fantasy novel Teito Monogatari (1985—1989) by Hiroshi Aramata. In the novel, the protagonist Yasunori Kato sponsors Haushofer into the Chinese secret society to aid his political agenda to free China and Korea from Japanese control.
In the 2003 anime series Fullmetal Alchemist (Episode 51: Laws and Promises ), Haushofer appears as a student of Van Hohenheim in the year 1921. It can be inferred from the episode that Hohenheim is the master of a secret society in a prestigious German university, and that he teaches alchemy to respected scholars (Haushofer included) in pre-Nazi Germany.
Haushofer is portrayed as a minor villain in the 2005 anime movie Fullmetal Alchemist the Movie: Conqueror of Shamballa, in which he is voiced by Masane Tsukayama in the Japanese version and John Swasey in the English version.

Famous quotes containing the word cultural:
“A culture may be conceived as a network of beliefs and purposes in which any string in the net pulls and is pulled by the others, thus perpetually changing the configuration of the whole. If the cultural element called morals takes on a new shape, we must ask what other strings have pulled it out of line. It cannot be one solitary string, nor even the strings nearby, for the network is three-dimensional at least.”
—Jacques Barzun (b. 1907)
