Junior City Council - The Junior City Council of Pretoria

The Junior City Council of Pretoria

The Junior City Council of Pretoria was founded in 1979 in the “Year of the Child”. It is a non-profit organization which serves the youth and the community of Pretoria. The council organizes several events to provide opportunities for the youth to interact and to take initiative and responsibility, while raising funds for charity.

The diversity of the projects successfully organized by the council is of great importance. All projects are planned and executed by the council members themselves.

An Advisory Committee, consisting of educators from the member schools, periodically advise the council. The Patron of the council has the authority to veto undesirable projects according to her discretion. The patron of the JCC is Mrs. Linda Oberholzer as in 2012.

The Junior City Council of Pretoria currently (2012) has 38 member schools. Each school has two representatives: one grade 10 and one grade 11 student, thereby a total of 76 council members. Each school that is a part of the council chooses 1 learner in grade 10 in their school that has great leadership qualities, through a tough selection process.

The term of office for all councilors is two years and it ends in April of their final school year. (Grade 12)

The Junior City Council of Pretoria consists of 7 committees, with each committee meeting different needs.

Famous quotes containing the words junior, city and/or council:

The junior senator from Wisconsin, by his reckless charges, has so preyed upon the fears and hatreds and prejudices of the American people that he has started a prairie fire which neither he nor anyone else may be able to control.
    J. William Fulbright (b. 1905)

I am more and more convinced that, with reference to any public question, it is more important to know what the country thinks of it than what the city thinks. The city does not think much.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

There by some wrinkled stones round a leafless tree
With beards askew, their eyes dull and wild
Twelve ragged men, the council of charity
Wandering the face of the earth a fatherless child....
    Allen Tate (1899–1979)
