Joyce Young (born c. 1925) is a Canadian woman famous for a single act of philanthropy and for being the aunt of Red Hat Inc. founder Bob Young.
Young and her husband Bill Young, both residents of Ancaster, Ontario, opted to help their nephew Bob with his high-tech venture shortly after its founding. Red Hat, Inc. is a company dedicated to open source software such as Red Hat Linux, and Red Hat Enterprise Linux.
When Red Hat's stock rose significantly after its initial public offering in 1999, they were able to sell enough stock to recoup their initial investment, but chose to retain some stocks.
By January 2000, the remaining stock was valued in the millions. This enabled her to make, in June 2000, a donation of $40 million dollars to the Hamilton Community Foundation to be used largely in improvement of Hamilton-area health facilities, an act that represented one of the single largest charitable donations in Canadian history. A long-time volunteer with local community groups, she later claimed her biggest concern was in giving away the money responsibly.
Famous quotes containing the words joyce and/or young:
“In Ireland they try to make a cat cleanly by rubbing its nose in its own filth. Mr. Joyce has tried the same treatment on the human subject. I hope it may prove successful.”
—George Bernard Shaw (18561950)
“Our chaotic economic situation has convinced so many of our young people that there is no room for them. They become uncertain and restless and morbid; they grab at false promises, embrace false gods and judge things by treacherous values. Their insecurity makes them believe that tomorrow doesnt matter and the ineffectualness of their lives makes them deny the ideals which we of an older generation acknowledged.”
—Hortense Odlum (1892?)
