Death

Stilwell died of stomach cancer on October 12, 1946 at the Presidio of San Francisco, while still on active duty. His ashes were scattered on the Pacific Ocean, and a cenotaph was placed at the West Point Cemetery. Among his military decorations are the Distinguished Service Cross, Distinguished Service Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster, the Legion of Merit degree of Commander, the Bronze Star, and the Combat Infantryman Badge (this last award was given to him as he was dying from stomach cancer).

Famous quotes containing the word death:

    You’re very beautiful. So beautiful I’m going to make you immortal. Like Kharis, you will live forever. What I can do for you I can also do for myself. Neither time nor death can touch us. You and I together for eternity here in the temple of Karnak. You shall be my high priestess.
    Griffin Jay, Maxwell Shane (1905–1983)

    Ai! ai! we do worse! We are in a fix! And you’re out, Death let
    you out, Death had the Mercy, you’re done with your century, done with God, done with the path thru it—
    Allen Ginsberg (b. 1926)

    Nor has his death the world deceiv’d
    Less than his wondrous life surpriz’d;
    For if he like a madman liv’d
    At least he like a wise one dy’d.
    Miguel De Cervantes (1547–1616)
