Tavares was born on September 4, 1968 in Toronto, Ontario, CAN, to Dorotea and Manuel Tavares who are Portuguese immigrated to Toronto. Tavares is an uncle of ice hockey player John Tavares, the first overall pick of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, a forward with the New York Islanders of the National Hockey League and has also won the CHL Rookie of the Year Award and the OHL Rookie of the Year for the 2005–06 OHL season.
