John's parents were Albert C. & Josephine (Thelen) Dunning from Shelby, Nebraska. Dunning married Esther Laura Blevins in 1930. They had two children, John Ray, Jr. and Ann. Their son became a Professor of Physics and Astronomy at Sonoma State University.
