John Paul Stevens - Popular Culture

Popular Culture

Stevens was portrayed by the actor William Schallert in the film Recount. He was portrayed by David Grant Wright in two episodes of Boston Legal in which Alan Shore and Denny Crane appear before the Supreme Court.

According to an April 2009 article in the Wall Street Journal, Stevens "rendered an opinion on who wrote Shakespeare's plays", proclaiming himself an Oxfordian, "that is, he believes the works ascribed to William Shakespeare actually were written by Edward de Vere, 17th Earl of Oxford." As a result, he was appointed Oxfordian of the Year by the Shakespeare Oxford Society. According to the article, Justices Scalia and Blackmun shared Stevens's belief.

Famous quotes containing the words popular culture, popular and/or culture:

Like other secret lovers, many speak mockingly about popular culture to conceal their passion for it.
    Mason Cooley (b. 1927)

There’s that popular misconception of man as something between a brute and an angel. Actually man is in transit between brute and God.
    Norman Mailer (b. 1923)

Anthropologists have found that around the world whatever is considered “men’s work” is almost universally given higher status than “women’s work.” If in one culture it is men who build houses and women who make baskets, then that culture will see house-building as more important. In another culture, perhaps right next door, the reverse may be true, and basket- weaving will have higher social status than house-building.
