Thome lives in Peoria, Illinois during the offseason.
On November 16, 2007, Thome and his wife, Andrea, had a second child, son Landon. The couple has a daughter, Lila Grace. Thome has also established funding for to put his 10 nieces and nephews through college.
It was reported on ESPN's SportsCenter that shortly after his nephew, Brandon, was paralyzed in an accident, he asked Thome to hit a home run for him; Thome granted the request by hitting two in the subsequent game. In a 2007 poll of 464 Major League Baseball players, Thome tied for second friendliest player with Mike Sweeney.
