2013 Budget Challenge
In 2013, Appropriations chairman Pitts and Speaker Joe Straus, who ousted Craddick in 2009, face the task of reconciling an expected $4.7 billion shortfall in the state budget. Since 2003, annual spending by Texas state government has been kept in the lower single digits and below the rates of inflation and population growth. Pitts said that he is awaiting a report from Texas Comptroller Susan Combs regarding the expected receipts for the 2013-2014 biennium. The state also awaits an estimate on looming expenditures.
