Birmingham Town Council

He was a close friend of Joseph Chamberlain and supported the radical group around Chamberlain in developing local improvement schemes in Birmingham, parks, and what at the time was called 'gas-and-water socialism'. He took over practical management of the education committee and served as Mayor of Birmingham in 1878-1879. Famous quotes containing the words town and/or council:

I didn’t have any looks, I didn’t have any talent, and it was easy for me to say to the Lord, “I don’t have anything.” If you only knew where I came from ... this leetle-bitty town with no more than twelve hundred people in it. So ... anything I am today, He is the one who has done it [ellipses in source].
    Kathryn Kuhlman (1907–1976)

There by some wrinkled stones round a leafless tree
With beards askew, their eyes dull and wild
Twelve ragged men, the council of charity
Wandering the face of the earth a fatherless child....
    Allen Tate (1899–1979)
