Biography

Jean Berko was born in Cleveland, Ohio, to parents who had immigrated from Hungary. She graduated from Cleveland Heights High School in 1949. She received an A.B. in history and literature, an A.M. in linguistics, and a combined Ph.D. in linguistics and psychology, all from Harvard/Radcliffe. During her graduate education, Berko was advised by Roger Brown, a pioneer in the field of child language acquisition. She married Andrew Mattei Gleason, a professor of mathematics at Harvard, on 26 January 1959, with whom she subsequently had three daughters.
