Japanese Destroyer Ayanami (1929) - The Wreck

The Wreck

In late July 1992 marine archeologist Robert Ballard led an expedition to Ironbottom Sound and found southeast of Savo Island at 9°10′S 159°52′E / 9.167°S 159.867°E / -9.167; 159.867Coordinates: 9°10′S 159°52′E / 9.167°S 159.867°E / -9.167; 159.867 at a depth of approximately 700 metres (2,300 ft), among thirteen newly discovered shipwrecks, the remains of Ayanami. The hull and keel of the ship appear to have been broken by a starboard torpedo blast just behind the bridge; the ship came to rest in two pieces, with the stern upright, and the bow twisted and lying on its starboard side.

Famous quotes containing the word wreck:

Perchance the time will come when we shall not be content to go back and forth upon a raft to some huge Homeric or Shakespearean Indiaman that lies upon the reef, but build a bark out of that wreck and others that are buried in the sands of this desolate island, and such new timber as may be required, in which to sail away to whole new worlds of light and life, where our friends are.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

Crash on crash of the sea,
straining to wreck men, sea-boards, continents,
    raging against the world, furious.
    Hilda Doolittle (1886–1961)
