A song was recorded by Country and Western music singer Lefty Frizzell about the river, called "James River", released on the "Saginaw, Michigan" album.

Avail, a music group from Richmond recorded Over the James, a 1998 "post hardcore" LP record released by Lookout Records (and re-released in 2006 by Jade Tree Records) named in honor of the river, that included a song by the same name.
